My Goals as a PR Professional in the Fashion Industry

October 19, 2011

As you may  know I’m in love with Fashion, if not it’s alright I won’t be offended (Maybe just a little). But now since you are aware I want to go over some of the specifics of how I became semi- interested in becoming a Pr Professional or as the fashion Industry might say Fashion Public Relations Specialist.  First this may sound a bit odd but I was always interested in becoming an Journalist, During high school I managed to see a Movie called The Devil wears Prada  I found this movie to be inspirational and motivating also admiring the Career of  Anna Wintour. I thought to myself and still remain a fact till this day that I wanted to be the next Editor-in-chief for Vogue, Wow!! I know you’re thinking wait Editor -in Chief has no relation what so ever to Public Relations right?? Wrong it does how you say in order to have such a connection between the two but are not limited in the Fashion World. ‘Think Public Relations’ page 29 explains “Five Essential Abilities that you should develop such as: writing skills, Research ability, Planning expertise, Problem- solving Abilities, and also a little knowledge of Business/Economics. In due time an Adviser directed me to venture into becoming a Pr professional as a way to experience all the roles in modern media, I am not certain if  this professional career will satisfy my hunger for fashion but I’m along the lines of giving it a try.

However my current plan is evolving my profession around PR but keep in mind my ambition is to alter my desire and fortunately develop a role in Editing, still being as it may I’m currently writing for The Eastern Echo providing qualifications for both positions, as well as in the Emu fashion organization Fashion Avenue.  Making those personal connections with others: to gain the hands on evidence that will let me advance in my field of study, while getting in the habit of communicating effectively.  Since there’s no way for me to sky rocket to the top in the fashion world unless I have the necessary skills here are some of the goals I have prepared along the way for my life long career. Engaging with diverse ethnicity’s I think it’s important to have other perspectives in the PR world and learn from multitude of individuals who have experience in their field of expertise, being able to accumulate my publications as a student creating a portfolio , Applying my knowledge and what I will ascertain in the future to have good business sense and gradually contacting the right companies and or organizations to have a good standing reputation. I hope to achieve these tasks during undertaking my responsibilities as A Professional Fashion PR Specialist/Editor-in-Chief.                             Jasmine Carter-

Jasmine did you see this article? http://www.prcouture.com/2010/04/01/fashion-101-so-what-do-fashion-publicists-do/

The writer interviews the PR Director for Jill Stuart. I think she says quite a bit about the profession of PR and fashion.

You should consider reaching out to folks who do what you want to do as a career in order to understand more fully how PR and fasion connect.

always go with my first mind Thank you for the insight. I believe you are absolutely right I haven’t

really as of yet met anyone but if you are open to introducing me to some fellow students or some

one you know that has those connections I would be delighted in meeting them. I am going to use

this resource information wisely thank you again for this helpful advice =)

    Hey Jasmine!

I think that is an awesome goal to have set for yourself. If you love fashion and PR, it would be only natural to combine them! I would love to hear more about the connections between the two though, because I know that being an editor in chief is more on the journalism side! How would you be involving things we are learning in our PR class to your goal position?

Great idea and great way of integrating PR into real scenarios =)

    Love,
    Cortney

Since I am fairly clueless when it comes to the world of fashion, I decided to do a little investigating about the interaction between communication and fashion. Here is an interesting blog about fashion as communication. http://bit.ly/nZXyvL Since most of us are studying communication in some form, I think this is worth a read! Good luck in your pursuit of a job using your communications skill in fashion Jasmine!

    Hey Courtney,

I’m excited about your interest in fashion Public Relations as far as involving things from our Pr

class I know I always wanted to create a fashion blog like the one’s you would see on you-tube

and such: Girls having different outfits telling their audiences where they can purchase them for a

reasonable price. Or using word press to market my knowledge of the latest trends, and or my

publications as proof I have experience in writing for fashion and pr as well. These are just a few

things I could do in order to get me started, Yes in fact Editor – in – chief is more on the Journalism

side so I’m hoping to gain much ability in Pr as I can to help advertise my skills to become well

    rounded =)

    Hello Sam,

For starters I wanted to say thank you for the Blog!! Great Find, And yes I can never learn to much

communication in the fashion, I will do my very best to pursue my dreams and become a Guru in the

    fashion industry =)

I like it! You’ve thought so much about this! That you’ve set goals is so smart, I definitely need to get on that in a more structured way. I’d love to know more in regards to how you feel about writing for the Echo, I’ve been writing for some time, and I think I’d enjoy a public print outlet. Hmmm, you may have just incited a goal ;)

Yea, as you may know, fashion isn’t my thing. If you didn’t know, I won’t get offended (cause that means it’s not that obvious that I shop exclusively at Value World!)

Thank you for the insight into you!

p.s. guilty secret: I loved The Devil Wears Prada!

  8. October 23, 2011 5:11 am

    Joe,

Thank you soooo much!! I would be glad to give you a heads up on the Echo and chat with you

about curiosities that you may have about publishing in print ( it’s a Great feeling). I did write this

blog in blood sweat and tears fearing that I may sound confusing or worse contradicting myself: so I

do appreciate your honest opinion good or bad it made me feel great about not really getting any

sleep writing this! And for the record your fashion sense is Just fine<— and so don't fret about it,

On that note your secret is perfectly my personal Favorite!!

I’m not very knowledgeable on the fashion industry, but I can imagine how important PR is. Image is literally everything. The experience you have on the matter showed off well in this blog. As a journalism major myself, I really found myself, as I read your blog, being grabbed by the sense of credibility in your delivery.

  10. October 23, 2011 9:31 pm

    Lee,

Oh my gosh, you are so right image does play a Major role in PR and the Fashion Industry also, I

guess you could say that this blog could be a personal diary of mine in some sort of way, I felt

inspired when forming this finding my self all over again not forgetting why I wanted to become a

writer in the first place. I urged the need to express that because it is very special to me and

encourages me and using my skills to the fullest!! I ‘m lost for words because I never would have

imagined that writing this would help anyone find something in them selves that makes them happy.

Thanks for that new experience that I shall take with me to accomplishing my goals =)

“Engaging with diverse ethnicity’s I think it’s important to have other perspectives in the PR world and learn from multitude of individuals who have experience in their field of expertise” By you acknowledging the importance of this I think your at a great start. The fashion industry is very diverse and goes way beyond the USA, your biggest clientele would be those from other countries. I would say that The Devil Wears Prada would be a great aspect of getting a Hollywood view of the high class Vogue fashion Industry. Awesome Job Jasmine

    Brittany,

Yesss I can’t stress enough of how important that is because their are individuals in this world

who will not have the same opinions as you; or Ideas and it’s imperative that you are open to all of

them whether it is positive or negative. I want to be able to understand different point of views and

gain from them. And also I wanted to show this film because it’s something we all can relate to

no matter what industry you may work for it has a sense of realism that we all or may have

    experienced before.

As I tweeted before, I’m a big lover of fashion as well. While I’m no expert, I stumbled upon some fashion blogs over the summer and have become addicted. My old sorority sister started one, and I’m in the works to launch one later this year as well :) http://www.cupcakesandcashmere.com is one blog I follow on a regular basis. I give you props on letting your dream and passion be known, and your courage to follow it!

Editor-in-chief? That is a huge and amazing goal. I really hope it happens. My goal was to start my own magazine, but that’s looking a little out of question. But you are actually on your way. Writing for the paper and being in loved in EMU fashion seem like great ways to get ahead in the fashion world. Keep it up, I’m rooting for you.

I liked the movie as well but I never thought that’s how it really worked in the industry but I guess it makes sense. I do believe that working as a PR professional will help prepare you for the ultimate role at Vogue. I liked the picture as well, I think it fits your personality:)

  18. October 26, 2011 4:06 am

    Tasha,

I’m glad you learned something new from this blog and yes I believe if I do everything accordingly
